gill james is an award-winning Canadian, Cree and Métis cinematographer, producer, and mixed media artist, born in Treaty 7 territory and now based on the traditional lands of the Coast Salish—xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ Renowned for his evocative lens, his cinematography shines in the debut film Backward Fall (dir. Drew Pollins), which aired on CBC and earned international acclaim, One with the Devil, which won "Best Cinematography" at the 2015 Leo Awards. Gill’s music video work includes Repeat by Allan Rayman ft. Jessie Reyez, Back to the Start by Old Man Canyon, Sleepwalker by Hey Ocean!, and Weird Kid by Kiesza, with his visuals gracing APTN, Telus, Knowledge, and CBC. He has lensed campaigns for global brands like BMW, Coca-Cola, J&J and General Motors. Rooted in his Indigenous heritage from Kinosao Sipi (Norway House Cree Nation), Gill’s raw, resourceful style reflects a family of creatives and the Pacific Northwest’s natural pulse. A Waldorf alumnus with a diverse background in dance and fine arts education. A graduate of UBC’s Film Production Program and Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) , he blends fine art foundations with boundless curiosity, crafting compelling visual stories that celebrate.
