James Gill is an award winning ininew (Cree) cinematographer, producer, photographer and artistmaker.  He is a registered Status Indian, born in Treaty 7 territory in Calgary and is, with gratitude, residing and practicing on the territory of the Coast Salish, Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.


His debut film Backward Fall directed by Drew Pollins aired on CBC and gained international acclaim, their follow up film One with the Devil won "Best Cinematography" at the 2015 Leo Awards.  James is known for his music video work Repeat by Allan Rayman ft. Jessie Reyez, Back to the Start by Old Man Canyon, Sleepwalker by Hey Ocean!  and Weird Kid By KIESZA.  James' cinematography has played on APTN, Telus, Knowledge and CBC.   He has lensed campaigns for global brands that include BMW, Coca-Cola, Johnson & Johnson and General Motors.


His fine art and musical projects include experimental folk music by artists Lost Coffee, Rhelmx, and Mothers Moniker and artful product/industrial design company JOiO.CO ( which creates unique coffee accessories and kitchen paddles.


As an Indigenous artist, whose mother’s family is from Kinosao Sipi (Norway House Cree Nation), and with Métis and European settler ancestors, James presents a raw style that reflects a unique worldview and resourceful nature influenced by a family of creatives, and grounded in the natural setting of the Pacific Northwest.


James spent many hours of his formative years observing his mother and maternal grandfather as they developed themselves as artists.  James is a graduate of the University of British Columbia's Film Production Program and OCADU (Ontario University of Art and Design). His visual style is influenced by his fine art foundations and his innate Indigeneity.
